WHERE AMERICA’S FAVORITE TV SHOWS WERE FILMED
--Two-Hour World Premiere Special Hosted by John Ritter Features Trips
Down Memory Lane with George Lindsey (“The Andy Griffith Show”), Christopher
Knight (“The Brady Bunch”), Adam West (“Batman”), Ken Kercheval (“Dallas”), Mary
McDonough (“The Waltons”) and Many More –
Walton’s Mountain…Southfork…the Ponderosa Ranch…Gotham
City…Metropolis….Mayberry. For years these magical locations – and their
colorful inhabitants – were brought to life in our living rooms each week
through some of television’s most popular and enduring series. Now, on Sunday,
April 7 from 9 -11 PM (ET/PT), the Travel Channel provides an unforgettable
sightseeing tour down television’s memory lane with a two-hour special, TV ROAD
TRIP. Hosted by actor John Ritter, best known for his role as Jack Tripper on
Three’s Company, TV ROAD TRIP features stars from some of America’s most-loved
TV series as they visit the cities and sites where their shows were filmed.
From Archie Bunker’s home in Queens, New York to the Cartwright’s Ponderosa
Ranch in Lake Tahoe, Nevada to the Ewing’s Southfork estate in Dallas, Texas, to
Mount Airy, North Carolina, the real-life Mayberry from The Andy Griffith Show,
TV ROAD TRIP is the TV fan’s ultimate vacation.
This two-hour tour around America makes stops at the following TV show
destinations:
• Mount Airy, North Carolina: Actor George Lindsey, “Goober” from the
Andy Griffith Show, stops by the city Mayberry was based on. Viewers see the
real life Snappy Diner, Wally’s Service Station and Floyd’s Barbershop
popularized on the TV show.
• Dallas, Texas: Ken Kercheval, “Cliff Barnes” from Dallas, goes to the
palatial Southfork Ranch that sits on 340 acres, just north of Dallas. Each
year, 400,000 tourists make a pilgrimage to the site of the “Ewing” Mansion,
which is kept authentic down to the awnings and swimming pool, the site of some
classic “cat” fights. The mansion also boasts a museum with famous artifacts
from the show including the gun that shot J.R., Lucy’s wedding dress and saddles
belonging to Pam, Bobby, J.R. and Sue Ellen.
• New York City: Wacky entrepreneur Kenny Kramer, the inspiration for
Seinfeld’s Cosmo Kramer, leads viewers to the real-life Monk’s Café (the group’s
favorite hangout) and the “Soup Nazi’s” kitchen. Joyce Randolph, “Trixie” from
The Honeymooners, takes viewers to the Jackie Gleason statue at the New York
Port Authority, while an official tour guide also points out the Friends
apartment building in Greenwich Village and the Brooklyn Heights Brownstone home
of the Huxtables from The Cosby Show.
• Covington, Georgia and Sperryville, Virginia: The Dukes of Hazzard
stars Ben Jones, “Cooter,” and James Best, “Sheriff Roscoe P. Coltrane,” hot-rod
their way to Sperryville, the town that boasts a Cooter museum. Jones also
visits the small town of Covington where the first five episodes of the series
were filmed.
• Los Angeles, California: Christopher Knight, “Peter” from The Brady
Bunch, takes viewers on a nostalgic drive to see the houses used for The Brady
Bunch, The Nelsons, Beverly Hills 90210, and the Melrose Place apartment
building. He also tours some of the more recognizable sites seen in Baywatch,
Dragnet, Batman, Rockford Files, M*A*S*H, and the actual bar from Cheers, now on
display in a Hollywood museum. Viewers will also see the famous cottage from
Fantasy Island located in the Los Angeles Arboretum, the Happy Days house and
the fishing hole from The Andy Griffith Show.
• Schuyler, Virginia: Mary McDonough, “Erin” from The Waltons travels
back to Schuyler, VA. - a town with no traffic lights, one restaurant, and four
churches - where series creator Earl Hamner, Jr. grew up. Hamner’s home and many
other sites provided his inspiration for the show.
• Metropolis, Illinois: Noel Neill, “Lois Lane” from The Adventures of
Superman, flies to the “Superman Capitol of the World”- Metropolis, IL. Although
the TV series was never filmed there, each year the city celebrates the “Man of
Steel” with a festival where visitors can join a Superman look-alike contest,
read the local paper called The Daily Planet, or visit an impressive Superman
museum with over 75,000 items including George Reeve’s original costume and a
lunchbox that is now worth \$7,000.
• Incline Village, Nevada (near Lake Tahoe): For a little Western flavor,
TV ROAD TRIP saddles up and heads to the Ponderosa Ranch where the Cartwright
home in Bonanza attracts more than 250,000 visitors every year. The Ponderosa
Ranch was a working ranch owned by the Anderson family who reminisce about the
crazy antics of Bonanza cast members such as Michael Landon and Lorne Greene.
In addition to visiting show locations, many celebrities reveal little-known
secrets about their TV shows. Adam West who played “Batman” divulges the secret
location of the Bat Cave (the exterior was shot right under the Hollywood sign)
and explains that he was uncomfortable at first about donning the Batman costume
with tights in front of his co-stars. Nancy Greene, widow of Lorne Greene who
played family patriarch Ben Cartwright on Bonanza, reveals that her husband
initially found the character of Ben to be too harsh, so he softened the role,
modeling it after his own father. And, Noel Neill “Lois Lane” and Jack Larson
“Jimmy Olson” from The Adventures of Superman tell of the production tricks used
to make Superman fly in an era before special effects technology was developed.

Christopher Knight will forever be known as “Peter,” the middle son on the long
running television series The Brady Bunch (1969-1974) that lives on in
syndication throughout the world. Having experienced his teen years in the
public spotlight, Chris is now particularly sensitive to childhood and
adolescent issues that can bring about lasting psychological effects. Chris
remains committed to young people by supporting a variety of youth-oriented
causes. In particular, his own ongoing battle with Attention Deficit Disorder
(ADD) prompted him to take an active roll in raising awareness about the
condition. Knight has more or less maintained an arms length relationship with
the entertainment industry over the last 14 years; having established himself as
a high-tech entrepreneur during this period. As co-founder and Executive Vice
President of Eskape Labs, a recent acquisition of Hauppauge Digital Incorporated
(NASDAQ: HAUP), Knight has brought to market a series of external video devices
that make computers function like televisions and VCRs. This year, Chris plans
to dial up his entertainment industry involvement in an effort to strike a
balance between his high-tech business interests and the pursuit of his acting
career.
KENNY KRAMER- the inspiration for “Cosmo Kramer” on SEINFELD
As the neighbor of Seinfield creator Larry David, Kenny Kramer served as the
inspiration for the unpredictable and affable bachelor character “Cosmo Kramer”
played by Michael Richards. Prior to serving as Cosmo's model, Kenny had a long
career as a stand-up comedian and was the manager of a British reggae band. For
the past four years, Kenny has been the host of Kramer's Reality Tour and
Kramer's Reality Road Show, which includes a New York bus tour of sites made
famous on the show. Seinfeld did an episode spoofing Kenny's tour when Cosmo
Kramer started The Peterman's Reality Tour in "The Muffin Top" episode. Kenny
has made numerous television appearances including The Today Show and A&E’s
Biography of Seinfeld. He has visited colleges, comedy festivals, state fairs
and even Australia with the road show version of his tour. In his spare time, he
has run for Mayor of New York, served as a corespondent for Hard Copy, written,
produced and hosted "Kramer's New York" segments for Fox 5's Good-Day N.Y. and
appeared in the original New York company of Tony and Tina's Wedding playing
himself.
JACK LARSON - “Jimmy Olsen” from THE ADVENTURES OF SUPERMAN
Jack Larson was cast in the role of Daily Planet cub reporter “Jimmy Olsen” when
he was only 17-years old with the understanding that the show would probably
never be broadcast. He filmed 26 episodes that first year and the show was a
resounding success, airing for six years. Jack’s popularity soared and he was
named the first “TV Teen idol” by People Magazine. Thanks to syndication, the
series still has a cult following and has truly become an American icon. In
fact, the bow tie Jack wore as “Jimmy Olsen” is currently on display at the
Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C. In recent years, Larson has made a
few comebacks as “Jimmy Olsen” on television including a cameo appearance in a
Superbowl commercial with Jerry Seinfeld (an avid Superman fan) and he appeared
on a 1996 episode of the popular television series, Lois and Clark. Jack's
post-Superman career has focused mainly on script writing and composing. He
wrote The Candied House, a retelling of the Hansel and Gretel story, Chuck an
off-Broadway hit play about an epileptic magazine salesman, and Lord Byron I
libretto for the Virgil Thomson opera, among others. Larson’s works have been
performed at venues ranging from Carnegie Hall to The Hollywood Bowl. His latest
written work is the text for a chamber opera, The Astronaut's Tale which will be
released this summer. In the 1970’s and ‘80s, Larson helped produce a number of
popular films including Urban Cowboy, The China Syndrome, Bright Lights, Big
City, Perfect and The Paper Chase.
GEORGE LINDSEY – “Goober” from THE ANDY GRIFFITH SHOW
Although he played the “simple” gas station attendant, “Goober” on The Andy
Griffith Show and Mayberry RFD for more than seven years, George Lindsey’s
talents extend well beyond the city limits of Mayberry. Lindsey began his career
in the early 1960’s starring in Broadway musicals. He then appeared in more than
40 television shows before landing the role of “Goober.” In 1971, George stopped
by the Nashville studios of Hee Haw to say hello to friends and ended up landing
a 20 year role on the series. Other television credits include M*A*S*H,
Laugh-In, Gunsmoke, and The Alfred Hitchcock Hour, among others. George has also
appeared in several motion pictures including Cannonball Run II, The Rescuers,
Robinhood, Snowball Express, and The Aristocats. On the personal side, George is
a compassionate humanitarian. He has raised more than one million dollars for
the Special Olympics and he has held golf tournaments and established an aquatic
center at Alabama State Hospital, both to benefit the mentally retarded.
MARY MCDONOUGH – “Erin” from THE WALTONS
In 1970, at the tender age of nine, Mary McDonough was cast in The Homecoming: A
Christmas Story by Earl Hamner that served as the pilot for The Waltons. She
went on to play Erin, the sensitive, emotional middle daughter for ten years.
Since The Waltons, Mary has appeared on numerous television programs including a
co-host role on McDougall M.D., a special correspondent for Entertainment
Tonight and guest roles on E.R., Ally McBeal, The Division, Diagnosis Murder and
Walker Texas Ranger. Mary is also a social activist serving as a Youth
Ambassador for the American Heart Association and she is actively involved in
the American Lupus Society, a disease from which she suffers. In addition, Mary
lobbies Congress on women’s health issues.
NOEL NEILL- “Lois Lane” from THE ADVENTURES OF SUPERMAN
Although she was the “original” Lois Lane in the Kirk Alyn Superman serials that
played in movie theatres from 1948-50, Noel Neill was the second actress to
portray Lois Lane on the television series with George Reeves. She appeared in
various films in the 1940’s before making the crossover to television. Neill’s
father, a city editor for the Fairchild Publication newspaper in Minneapolis/St.
Paul, helped prepare her for the role of Lois Lane. Despite her father’s desire
for Noel to go to college and become a journalist, she ended up as an actress
playing a female reporter. Noel believes that the Lois Lane character broke down
barriers in the workplace and inspired many women to pursue careers in
journalism. Although she retired from show business after the Superman series
ended, she did make an uncredited cameo appearance in 1978 in Superman: The
Movie as young Lois Lane's mother.
JOYCE RANDOLPH – “Trixie Norton” from THE HONEYMOONERS
Joyce Randolph is best known for her feature role as “Trixie Norton” on the
classic TV show The Honeymooners starring Jackie Gleason, Audrey Meadows and Art
Carney. This comedy series ran from 1951-1957 and still has a late-night run on
cable’s TV Land. Randolph began her acting career at the age of 19 with small
parts on Broadway and made the jump to television in the late 1940’s. In recent
years, she has made an appearance in A&E’s Biography of Jackie Gleason and she
has a cameo role in an upcoming film And She Was. Randolph stays connected to
the acting world in her role as “Shepherd” of The Lamb’s Club, a fraternity of
sorts for New York actors. Randolph lives in New York City where she enjoys
spending time with her grown son.
JOHN RITTER- HOST of TV ROAD TRIP, "Jack Tripper" from
THREE'S COMPANY
John Ritter came to national prominence as the star of television’s
longest-running hit comedy series Three’s Company, for which he won Emmy, Golden
Globe and People’s Choice Awards. John has starred in more than 25 television
movies and has guest starred on many television series including Ally McBeal.

Red Dog (PBS Stations). Motion picture credits include They All Laughed, Noises
Off, Slingblade, Skin Deep, Problem Child, and Panic. John has recently
completed a nine-month starring role in the Broadway premiere of Neil Simon’s
The Dinner Party.
MITCH VOGEL - Adopted son, “Jamie Cartwright” from BONANZA
Mitch began his acting career at eight years old, playing the title character in
Tom Sawyer. Before his 11th birthday, he was cast in his first film as one of
Lucille Ball's children in Yours, Mine and Ours. He then guest-starred in many
television shows, including Adam 12, Gunsmoke, and Ironside and a guest
appearance on Bonanza, that planted a seed in the mind of the show's executive
producer, David Dortort, which would later come to fruition for the young actor.
At age 12, Mitch co-starred with Steve McQueen in the 1969 movie The Reivers,
and received praise from critics and audiences alike. This led to more TV
appearances, two movies for Disney, and a phone call from David Dortort. Cast as
Jamie Hunter, an orphan taken in by Ben Cartwright (played by Lorne Greene),
Mitch’s character was eventually adopted into the family as Jamie Cartwright.
After Bonanza, Michael Landon cast him as Johnny Johnson, a re-occurring role on
Little House on the Prairie. Mitch is currently a successful business executive
in the Home Security Industry. Married to his wife Chrissy for 16 years, they
have two daughters, Shauna, 15 and Melanie, 11.
ADAM WEST – “Batman”
Adam West is the “classic” Batman. In 1966, he starred in the title role of a
television series that changed his life. Based on the popular comic-book hero,
the kitschy Batman series ran for three seasons and was a resounding success
with viewers young and old. TV Guide put him on their cover in 1966 and to this
day, it remains one of the top three most collectible TV Guides along with
Lucille Ball (I Love Lucy) and George Reeves (Superman). In 1966, West also
starred in the original Batman movie (recently released on DVD, this film sold
more than 80,000 copies in two weeks!). He has stayed busy since Batman with
cameos as himself as well as dramatic roles. He appears as a semi-regular on
Fox’s The Family Guy playing “Mayor Adam West,” he recently made it to the
\$500,000 question on the celebrity version of Who Wants to Be a Millionaire and
he has an upcoming guest spot on The Drew Carey Show. West also played the role
of the evil “Breathtaker” on the SciFi Channel’s series Black Scorpion. Recently
A&E featured Adam West in their Biography series which was the highest rated
episode of the series that year. West’s first book, Back to the Bat Cave,
published in 1994, sold out in six months and he is currently working on his
second Batman book to be published later this year. Adam West is married and has
six grown children. He lives in Sun Valley, Idaho where he is an avid skier and
gardener.
DID YOU KNOW?
INTERESTING FACTS REVEALED IN TV ROAD TRIP
• Television was first introduced to the public at the 1939 World’s Fair in New
York City.
• George Barris, creator of the Batmobile, transformed a used Lincoln
convertible into the famous Batmobile in only three weeks and on a budget of
\$15,000.
• The famous map of the Ponderosa Ranch featured in opening sequence of Bonanza
is actually wrong. The artists placed Carson City to the north of Ponderosa
rather than east. To fix this problem, producer David Dortort came up with the
ingenious idea of turning the compass so that north faced to the corner rather
than straight up.
• The famous vista where Mr. Roarke used to greet his guests on Fantasy Island
was none other than the Queen Anne’s cottage located deep in the Los Angeles
Arboretum. It was built in the 1880’s and has appeared in over 200 movies and TV
shows.
• A total of 369 Dodge Chargers were used to play the General Lee car throughout
the course of the Dukes of Hazzard series because the car took so much wear and
tear.
• Ben Jones “Cooter” was actually a U.S. Congressman in the 1980’s but
eventually lost his re-election bid to Newt Gingrich.
• Lucille Desiree Ball was not initially embraced by her hometown of Jamestown,
New York. Her rebellious nature, including being the first woman in town to wear
slacks, was scorned by locals.
• Kenny Kramer, the inspiration for the wacky character “Cosmo Kramer” made
famous by Michael Richards in Seinfeld, once lived across the hall from
Seinfeld’s creator Larry David. He reportedly sold the rights to his character
for \$1,000 before Seinfeld hit Nielsen gold.
• The creators of The Cosby Show actually changed the Huxatbles' professions so
that they could realistically afford a Brownstone in Brooklyn Heights. On the
original show proposal, the mother was supposed to be a plumber and the father
was supposed to be a limo driver but the house was too expensive, so they made
them into a lawyer and a doctor.
• At the end of each Waltons show, the signature goodnight sequence was based on
the real life experience of series creator Earl Hamner (who narrated each
episode). It took about ten minutes for Earl’s seven brothers and sisters to bid
each other goodnight until Earl’s father finally said, “That’s enough.”
